Let's face it: long commutes, office politics, and the nine-to-five grind are quickly becoming obsolete. According to a recent report, fifty-three million Americans (34 percent of the U.S. workforce) work from home as freelancers and home-based business owners. Many Predict that number will increase to 50 percent of the workforce by 2020.

 At long last, Americans are returning to the native way of living. Before the industrial revolution, everyone could consider themselves an entrepreneur — throughout the entire evolutionary process — all the way back. Working as an undervalued factory worker was simply a blip in an otherwise entrepreneurial human history.

Now, the small business owner can start-up and generate a six to seven figure gross income in 1–4 years. The telecommuting and freelancing consultant can make six figures working wherever she wants and often less than 30 hours per week.

Despite the enormity of this shift, little research captures the lived experience of those experiencing it. Consequently, the purpose of this post is to quickly get you up to speed on the lifestyle, benefits, challenges, and decisions being made by Americans working from home. Money Tips  an online community and information resource, recently surveyed 592 small business owners and telecommuters — and managed to reach some sound conclusions about their lives and experiences. People Who Work From Home Are More Productive and Happier

Eighty-six percent of Americans working from home LOVE or like working from home. So much so that 46 percent would turn down an offer of free office space just one mile from home!Not only are they happy, they’re more productive. Despite doing household chores, watching TV, and caring for children, 67 percent report being far more productive working from home than being in an office.

Their Finances Are Looking Good

Although just over half (56 percent) of small business owners are satisfied with their current standard of living, the large majority (69 percent) are confident they will be able to grow their income enough to enjoy the lifestyle they want in the future. Their confidence is not in vain. Ninety-two percent live either within or below their means, and 89 percent report they are on track with at least some of their financial goals.

Additionally, 50 percent report having multiple streams of income. This is not surprising; the economy of the future seems headed toward a workforce of individuals working as specialists for multiple “employers” — rather than narrowly spending their hours on behalf of one person or company. .

That said, the picture isn’t entirely rosy. Despite good financial habits and even a bright confidence in the future, nearly 80 percent of freelancers, business owners, and telecommuters lose sleep due to financial concerns.

Most Stay-at-Homers Are Younger Than 40

Almost 40 percent are millennials, and nearly 70 percent of Americans working from home are under 40 years old.I suspect these numbers will continue to increase as the rising generation is raised in a culture where working from home is the norm.

There Is No Clear Gender Gap in Those Who Choose to Work From Home

Fifty-one percent of Americans working from home are women. Many of these women are stay-at-home moms who have created successful businesses in the margins of their responsibilities.

Although there is no clear gender gap now, this may change over time. Despite being paid less than their male counterparts, recent trends highlight that women have more career ambition than men. Indeed, women earn more bachelor’s and graduate degrees than men do. Women are also considered harder working, less prone to distraction, and better employees and managers.

Most Folks Who Work From Home Have a College Education

Although popularized by famous entrepreneurs that dropping out of high school and college is the key to success, statistics portray a different story. The unemployment rate for Americans with bachelor’s degrees or higher is just 3.2 percent, compared to a national average of 6.1 percent. Among the small business owners who took the Moneytip’s survey:

• 2 percent have a Ph.D.
• 10 percent have an MBA or Master’s degree
• 43 percent have a bachelor’s degree
• 21 percent have an associate’s degree
• 21 percent have a high school degree or GED

These numbers are likely to shift over time however. With college rates continuing to rise, less people are going to college and opting for either trade schools or jumping right into work. Furthermore, increasingly more educational options exist via the internet that are either free or far cheaper than college.

Most Who Work From Home Work Less Than 40 Hours Per Week

Nearly 50 percent of Americans working from home work 25 hours per week or less.Only 16 percent work more than 40 hours per week.

According to Parkinson’s Law, work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion. When you set short time-lines, you work more efficiently. Furthermore, entrepreneurs are far more likely than the average employee to use automation or outsourcing tools.

Indeed, one of the primary motivations for the mobile lifestyle is freedom. Rather than focusing on hard work and effort which is foundation to the industrial model, the goal is results — and getting those results as efficiently as possible.

According to the survey, 80 percent of Americans working from home have been doing so for over one year. However, nearly half of all respondents have been working from home for less than two years.

Welcome to A Christmas Carol – Sitesell-style! Each day we’re going to re-introduce one of our successful SBIers and their amazing stories. Like the Ghost of Christmas Past, we’ll revisit these tales of old and see what lessons we can glean.

For this twelfth and final day of Christmas, we’re visiting with Suzanne Vennard, of DanceClass.com, who noticed something peculiar while working in London.

At the time, she was in her early twenties, and still enjoying her dancing, an activity she’d practiced since she was a little girl. So much that she would often bring her ballet bag to work with her so that she could rush off to class that evening.

Which brought quite a few looks and comments. Where are you going? What’s in the bag? To which she always responded, “I’ve got my ballet class tonight.”

And that’s when a peculiar thing happened.

You see, the first response that Suzanne always received was, “Ballet? Oh I’d love to be able to dance.”

But whenever Suzanne explained that there were plenty of adult beginner classes available, the second response she always received was, “Oooh, no, umm, I don’t think so, umm, no, ahh…”

She was puzzled to discover that people were actually afraid of dance lessons. Suzanne found that dance teachers wanted to teach, and that people wanted to learn, but they were stopped due to an incorrect image in their mind of what an adult dance class actually looked like.

It’s not “rows of identical girls in matching leotards pulling impossible positions with their ridiculously bendy bodies. Or, a whirling, swirling mass of partners tango-ing in perfect unison, elaborate costumes and haughty expressions.” It just isn’t.

So Suzanne decided to educate adults on what dance classes were available to them, and what those classes were really like.

She started her first website in 2000, a custom designed, beautiful Flash site that looked great, and did nothing. She had three great video products she’d put together that, when purchased, customers raved about. But she couldn’t get any amount of sustained traffic to make it work.

After talking to professional web designers who promised that they understood her problem and could help, she had a new site built, with yet again, the same poor result.

Truly frustrated, yet determined to make this idea of hers work, she started to research on her own what it took to build a highly trafficked website and online business, and that’s when she found SBI!.

How to Build Retirement Income and Have Fun Along the Way

Tell us about your website, www.shedking.net. When and why did you start your site?

I started ShedKing.net way back in 2003. My main intent was to show visitors how to build their own sheds by sharing my building knowledge with them, and to generate passive income with Google Adsense.

Eventually I would offer shed building plans, but that was way down the road. At the time, my site was hosted by another company, before I found out about SBI! (Site Build It!). I was so excited about what Ken Evoy had to offer, and wanted to switch my site over to Site Build It! right away, but I just couldn’t afford the $300. At that time there wasn’t the monthly payment option.

I remember convincing my wife that we needed to take out a home improvement loan and I would use $300 of that to pay for moving my ShedKing site over to SBI!. That was without a doubt one of the BEST decisions I have ever made!

I remember thinking that boy if I can just generate money from my site just to cover the $300, that would be the first step to conquer. Not only did I accomplish that goal with my site, but I have far surpassed that goal over the years. If I wasn’t such a stick in the mud, I could probably quit my day job and devote my full time energy to shedking.net and multiply my income even more!

What do you enjoy most about being an online business owner?

The thing I enjoy the most about being an online business owner is this: Nobody can take away what I have built with Site Build It!. I’ve taken my knowledge of construction and building sheds, along with SBI!’s amazing site building tools, and have grown a very profitable online business.

I had uploaded all pages on my site by going the UYOH route (UYOH = Upload Your Own HTML pages). I had about 90 pages to convert to SBI!’s BlockBuilder2 tool. I did about 5 or so, and knew with the time it was taking me that there was no way I could ever get it done by April 21st.

So I contacted the SiteSell Professionals and arranged for them to do it. It was well worth the money as they had the job done just in time and now my site is totally mobile ready! A big thanks to them – they they are a great bunch of people and so easy to work with.

Has your life changed since you started your sites? Can you describe these changes for us?

Has my life changed since finding Site Build It!? You bet it has! Because of SBI!, I have great cash flow every month. I have peace of mind knowing that when I retire that income should still be there. And with the extra time, I’ll be able to grow that income even more. I have fun working on my site. As I said recently in the forums, I’ll be working on my site till I can no longer tap the keys on my computer. It is a joy indeed.

What one piece of advice would you give someone who is just getting started as an online entrepreneur?

The best advice I could give anybody starting out as an entrepreneur is this…

Really really find out what you truly love to do and just do it. Pour your heart into it. Build your one of a kind website around your passion. Visitors to your site will pick up on your passion and reward you in ways you cannot imagine. Let them know you are there for them. Money will follow.

My second bit of advice is to learn all you can about social media; Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter. I have had my site for a long time and have learned a lot using Site Build It. Google search was where it was at for a lot of us and probably still is for most, but when I learned about Facebook and how it worked, and how to use it, my sales increased dramatically.

I sell shed plans on my site that I have developed and written all by myself. These plans are my main stream of income and I put every ounce of my learning into them to make them easy for buyers to use. I also provide email support to anyone who buys my plans so they don’t feel left out on a limb with no where to go when they don’t understand something about building a shed. I have had to learn a lot of software programs to write my plans, but I wouldn’t trade the time I have had to spend on this.

Benjamin Franklin famously kept a strict daily routine. He’d begin each morning by asking himself, “What good will I accomplish today?” He’d then proceed through a set schedule of activities, and end the day with the follow up question, “What good did I accomplish today?"

And in the middle of that day, as he was inventing and helping to, you know, form governments, he would take time out to read.

Every day.

Franklin would take a two-hour lunch break to review his accounts, dine, and read.

Why?

Because even Benjamin Franklin didn’t know everything.
